Day 27: you win some, you lose some.

Well- this lesson was bound to happen...

You know... you walk around for two hours, you're enjoying a nice evening- you find a PERFECT spot sitting in the sand, you can hear the crash of the waves..you set up your tri-pod, find the perfect shutter speed and aperture... you are ready to go! Then you realize you are surrounded by hundreds of your best friends and you never get a good shot of the beautiful fireworks that are lighting up the golden gate bridge.

Irritating!

However, after missing some of the show- I turned my camera off and instead snuggled up against my husband and enjoyed the show. No amazing shot to prove that we were there- but it was fun none the less. :)

Below is a picture I snapped while testing out my shutter length. (thats why you'll see the white streak in the left corner-- it is a plane.) I decide against editing it out..and just let it be. I didn't get any 'winning' shots..but I did have a nice evening with Jim.

Happy Memorial day everyone- I hope you forever remember the true meaning of this holiday! :)

Cheers!

Day 26: what color would you paint your house?

Would you be brave enough to paint your house lime green? Pour yellow on your window shades and have pink flowers dance the trim of your roof?

The individuality and beauty that houses around San Francisco possess continues to amaze me. While walking down Harrison street this house literally stopped me in my tracks. The colors and attention to detail are incredible.

I truly hope you all get the opportunity to visit SF one day and enjoy the beautiful culture it has to offer.
I hope to live in a home as colorful as this one day!

Cheers!

Day 25: Carnaval

Yesterday my husband and I went to the Carnaval festival in the mission district here in San Francisco.

We missed a lot of the dancing and the parade. (yikes- we slept in and found a killer deal on a $10 pair of rad k-swiss shoes) However,  we still got to walk around, enjoy the sunshine, devour a mango on a stick,(honestly, it was INCREDIBLE) dance to a reggae band, savor a few bud lights, and enjoy a few laughs together.

I really enjoy the variety of festivals that occur throughout the year here. Until the next one...

Cheers,
Renee :)

Hope and Courage: Where you least expect it

Every day you walk around your house turning on and off light switches. The bedroom light helps you pick out your clothes for the day, the bathroom light helps ensure your toothpaste ends up on your teeth rather then in your hair, the refrigerator light helps you have the ability to see that fresh piece of watermelon or the left over cheesecake- which in turn leaves you with a terribly difficult decision- but that is a personal matter, in which a simple light bulb cannot help you with.J

Lights bulbs, electricity, incredible technology – they are constantly around us. Yet, for most of us, it is likely that electricity and the ability to light an area is easily taken for granted. I am no different, I often times forget how terrifying it truly would be if I did not have my light switch to put myself at ease from the burglars that I truly believe are waiting for the perfect time to steal my precious jewels.

So, here is a little Oprah moment- love your light, be one with the light and for goodness sake say a little mental thank you to Thomas Edison for bringing this treasure into the world.

PHEW! Now that we’ve thanked Edison and added light bulbs to the grocery list, we can focus on the power sourceI am really driving at: the mental light bulb. We’ve all heard it, and hopefully most of us have experienced it. That ‘ah-ha’ moment, big or small you shouldn’t take it for granted.

Through my week- I felt as though the electricity running through my body was at full speed- blowing fuses, starting fires and frankly just trying to prevent a total burn out. My wires were crossed, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever see clearly again- and frankly, I was having a mental breakdown.

YIKES!

I normally do not like to ‘dump’ my emotions out to the entire world. However, my lights are firing back and I feel as though I should give credit- where credit is due.

So- thank you PG and E for fixing my electricity- that box in the basement just needed a simple readjustment. A simple $50 house call and BAM I am all cured. HA! As you know, life is not that easy.

I did a lot of digging, a lot of thinking, a little crying, a little yelling and a lot of truth telling- and my light is just flickering. You see, I have hope- and hope is incredibly larger then any bad storm.

I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Google + Photographer’s conference, here in San Francisco this week. As some of you may know, this was my first conference- one of the first events as to where I was publicly marking myself as a photographer. Even if I was just one surrounded by hundreds, it felt kind of like a big milestone.  J

Through this two day event I filled up a small journal with tips and trick of Google +, met a variety of photographers throughout the country, learned a thing or two about lighting, received my first portfolio review, gained knowledge on incredible charities, received inspiration regarding self-taught photography, became relieved when acknowledging my counseling skills will a great advantage when photographing individuals and on and on…  I was constantly surrounded by new knowledge. I felt almost as if, I was SpongeBob- walking around as a sponge, trying to get the most out of every second and every individual I spoke with.  The information overload was incredible!

However, crazy enough- the thing I believe in which I received the most benefit out of- was the information in which I already knew.

I attempted to capture my ‘ah-ha’/ hello Renee moment in a previous Facebook post:
(posted on my supper break at the conference- May 23, 2012…. chomping down Thai food as I continued to remember that Peter Hurley is just as regular person who happens to take incredible images and just may just be close enough to see the tears strolling down my face..YIKES!)

The best thing I have gathered from this conference has less to do with photography then it does with life in general.

Don't change your life (or style) based off of one persons critique.

Keep doing something- that special something that brings you joy. Don't do it to seek approval or to build an audience- do it simply because it makes you happy.

Be proud that you were brave enough to put yourself out there. You're work matters- simply because you're a person- and you matter.

It was almost as though, in that moment- through the bonding of orange cashew chicken and my iphone -that my wiring reset. Light bulbs went off and there it was again—hope.

I was attempting to digest so much more then the grease that I was injecting into my body. My entire Facebook post was derived from the class session: ‘Growing your audience’. Never in my dreams did I believe I would leave that hour with an incredibly increased amount of hope, inspiration, dedication, encouragement and much needed mental check.

Through this short 60 minute session I realized that we are all just human- just trying to make it in this world. It does not matter if you are into photography, singing, budgeting, bar tending, counseling, delivery or computing- you simply cannot change who you are just because one person does not agree with you. You do not need a reason to do the things you love- the mere acknowledgement that you love it gives you all the permission you will ever need. Stand strong- be proud that you took a risk that you were brave enough to be told no and smile because you have dreams big enough to reach for. Everything that you put effort into matters, even if no one will remember your name, and even if your name will never be written in a history book- you are human and therefore you matter.

You see- the deeper meaning of each single element is not new knowledge. However, like most of my college course material it simply was not retained. The single moments and inspirations that continue to help me grow- are easily forgotten.

Wednesday- is a day I will not soon forget. It will go down as one of the hardest days of the 26 years I have lived. The day I acknowledged my crossed wiring, lack of light and numbness throughout my body. Oddly enough, it also brought me courage, acknowledgment, anger, honesty, resentment, love, joy, and dedication. It gave me the hope that things will be alright- and that hope gave me the courage to ignite the light within myself.

I had an incredible ride this week- and for whatever this may provide to you, please remember that we are all human. We are not defined by our occupation, a single bad decision, our family history, what we take for granted, or what clothes we wear. We are simply human- and once and awhile- we forget to pay our electricity bill.

Keep your eyes open, your back straight and your chin up- you never know where your greatest inspiration may come from.

Until next time- Cheers! J

Day 24-27: San Diego

WHOA! Here I go again missing a few days. Yikes- I have got to step up my game. :)

My husband and I spent the weekend in San Diego visiting a few friends- I hate to make this short, but I'll let the pictures explain a few of the things we did throughout our visit.

I have my first photography conference starting tomorrow- and I've got to collect my thoughts and prepare for the big day. I cannot wait to share what I work on in the next few days!

Enjoy! Cheers!

Day 23: VW bus x2

Crazy busy day today!  I realized that I needed to prioritize my 'to-do list'- the list was continuing to expand, while the number of hours to accomplish all of  my tasks were diminishing. Weird concept- prioritizing..right? ha! Well, generally that is the way 'it should go'- however, soaking up the glorious San Francisco sun seems much more appealing. :)

I did not want to miss another day of my challenge- so without even trying, I realize my 'finding time' to ensure this little blog gets posted is yet another challenge dominated. Whoo-hoo! Feels good- right? And it is almost Friday! WOW- this day just keeps getting better and better!

I tend to miss the beautiful things that are continuously surrounding me- at times I feel as thought I need  a grand sceme project to photograph each day. When really- it is the every day little stuff that really matters- right? Like the little smile you get every time you see a neat car, a weeping willow tree, bright purple flowers, children laughing, the completion of a work out, a high-five...okay, okay, those are just some of the great things that have happened to me today..but never the less- they are beautiful.

While running a few laps around Alamo square today I caught a look at these two VW vans. I personally have always been a fan- honestly, how fun would it be to cruise around one of these- use it is your tailgating vehicle. Ahh, I image a big red Husker 'N' on the side of my future VW, while I grill hotdogs and play polish horseshoes. :)

Anyway- I suppose the moral of the story is quite cliche. Enjoy the small stuff- smile more then you frown and don't over think things. Live- just live.

Happy Thursday folks!

Until tomorrow..Cheers! :)

Day 22: Frosting!

whoo-hoo...I made it today! :) Back into the swing of things!

Today I decided to take my cake class and turn it into a mini story line. Focusing on my first experience making home made icing. Seems simple- right? Well, I am hardly a baker- and truly struggle with making things editable. Not too long ago I attempted to make a boxed cake- and failed. Missed the step to put water- or something ... it was as flat as a pancake.

So, today's journey was some what of a personal triumph! I successfully made a mess out of my kitchen and my clothing- however, came out with a 9 inch white cake with a cupcake on top. Now, do not tell Carlos from Cake Boss- but I may be running him out of business soon. ;)

Well- I hope you enjoy my simple story..Cheers!

Day 20 &21: revisiting

Yikes- there I go again- missing a day. Yesterday completely slipped by me- although, I did a lot of soul searching early in the day and have arrived at a few answers. But, I can't just spill all the beans quite yet. :)

Apart of my goals through this 90 challenge- as you may have previously read, is not only to become more confident behind the lens- it is also about challenging myself in a variety of additional areas. So, today I took a look at my very first photo shoot.. revisited a few of those images and re-imagined them.

The goal was to continue to familiarize myself with Lightroom and truly explore additional options that post processing can provide. Luckily through this proces, not only do I expand my knowledge of Lightroom, I also look closely at a variety of compositions, backgrounds, poses, etc. And it was fun looking back on photos of my beautiful friends.

Well- I promise to be better tomorrow! Have a wonderful Tuesday! :)

Cheers- Renee.

Days 17-19: Reno, NV

WHOA! This weekend was a bit of a whirl-wind. My husband and I decided that we wanted to make a spontaneous trip to Reno..a place we've always joked about going one day. Well- this time we made it happen. I packed up the car, picked him up from work and we hit the road.

4 hours and about 260 miles later- we landed in another world. We decided on the Regency hotel and casino, as they allowed dogs- and well, we hated to leave our four legged friend behind unless we had to. :) Trouble was- they lacked a lot of new age technology, that was not in slot machine form. Therefore- we lacked internet access.

Bummer- in a way..however, sometimes it is freeing not being as connected with the technical world- especially when your husband in a software engineer. ;)

We spent the weekend gambling, playing circus games, enjoying $1.49 bottled beers, dancing, eating at a buffet, laughing and enjoying each other's company. On our way back to San Francisco- we stopped and visited the Donner Memorial State park and enjoyed the breath taking views around Tahoe.

Here are a few pictures from our trip! Enjoy! :)

Until tomorrow..Cheers.

The Donner Party national park- it was incredible- yet eerie to visit. The rock portion of the statue stands 22 feet high- the height of the snow the Donner Party faced while on their journey from Illinois to California.
